Alcoholism Warning Signs: Are You An Alcoholic?

Alcoholism is everywhere in our society – at social events, bars, restaurants, in broad daylight walking down the street, and even in the workforce. Drinking and even heavy drinking are such highly-tolerated behaviors that recognizing the signs of a real problem can be difficult, especially when it’s you who’s doing the drinking. How much is too much?

You’re a few years out of school, your new job is stressful, and it’s what you used to do back in the college days. Or, you’ve been married for 25 years and are going through a really rough patch, both with your spouse, and your finances. A couple of drinks a night help ease the stress, but you wake up with a terrible headache and almost wish you could have a drink before work to take the edge off…and maybe you do. That’s a warning sign there. Here are some others:

1) Repeated neglect of responsibilities at work or home
2) Decreased performance at work, or in a student’s case – flunking classes at school
3) Reliance on alcohol to cope with life’s day-to-day tasks or in uncomfortable, stressful situations
4) Relationship problems due to your excessive drinking and neglect of responsibilities
5) Legal problems due to your drinking (arrests for public intoxication or drunk driving)
6) Regular black-outs when drinking and not recognizing when you’ve reached your limit
7) Increased drinking tolerance where you have to drink far more than you used to or have to resort to drugs in addition to alcohol in order to feel the same effects
8) Drinking in situations where it may be dangerous to you or hazardous, such as drinking while taking certain medications despite a doctor’s warning or drinking on the job

9) Concern from family and friends who think you may have a problem
10) Loss of interest in activities you once deemed fun and enjoyable

In addition to the behavioral warning signs of alcoholism, you may begin to experience physical symptoms when you don’t drink. These physical symptoms reflect your body’s dependence on alcohol and signify withdrawal, making it more difficult to resist the urge to drink.

1) Anxiety
2) Depression
3) Increased Irritability
4) Shakiness or trembling
5) Fatigue
6) Headache
7) Loss of appetite
8) Fever
9) In some cases, hallucinations
10) In some cases, seizures

You may not exhibit all of these signs or symptoms, maybe even just one or two. The fact that you’re reading this signifies you already may have a problem, and recognizing it is half the battle. The next battle is getting help. With the support of friends and family, therapy, and in some cases, medical support, you can successful overcome alcoholism.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment involves having experienced counselors and medical professionals devise a customized treatment plan for you. Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers are virtually everywhere, so you can find one that best suits you and your needs. There are even alcohol rehab programs for working professionals. Even if you suspect you or someone you love has a problem, it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s better to treat something that could potentially become a problem and to take preventative measures – it will save you money, grief, anguish, and your health in the long run.

If you’re interested in seeking alcoholism treatment and perhaps staying in a rehab centre, you may be concerned about being referred to one. Here’s a little more about how the process usually works.

You can be referred for alcoholism treatment by your GP or another addiction professional. However, you don’t need to be referred by a health professional; you can normally apply yourself.

A good rehab clinic will assess your situation and needs as part of the admission process. If they feel that the centre can’t meet your specific needs, they should let you know this and refer you to a service which is more suitable for you.

Rehab clinic admissions are obviously subject to vacancy availability and a good rehab centre will admit a limited number of residents at any one time. You should be placed on a waiting and list and given information on the date you’re likely to be admitted. Even when you’re on a waiting list for alcoholism treatment, staff should stay in touch to stay updated on your progress, discuss any queries and maintain your motivation.

In some cases, it is possible to be admitted as an ‘emergency’ case, depending on your circumstances. If your circumstances warrant it, your application can be fast-tracked via telephone for immediate admission.

What happens when you’re admitted to a rehab clinic?

When you arrive at the alcohol rehab centre, you’ll be greeted by staff. You’ll then undergo an admission assessment and there will be paperwork that you’ll probably need to sign. The staff will talk you through what’s happening and don’t be afraid to ask any questions about the process.

Clinic staff will talk to you about any medication that you require during your stay.

You should be aware that at the start of your stay, and perhaps during it, your possessions may be searched by centre staff. This is to ensure that you have not smuggled alcohol into the clinic.

Once the administration is out of the way, you’ll be helped to settle in and the detox process will be started.

Rehab centre rules

There are some rules in alcohol treatment centres. This is for the benefit of patients. Rules include:

• A strict no alcohol policy

• No non-prescribed medication

• Violence will not be tolerated

Those who don’t follow these rules will seriously jeopardise their recovery. They also run a risk of losing their place at the centre.

Next steps

If you think you may have an alcohol problem, consider an alcohol rehab clinic.
