The Dangers Of Alcohol Addiction And Benzodiazepine Use

For many alcoholics a common treatment to help them get over their dependency of alcohol is a short term prescription of a type of psychoactive drug known as benzodiazepine. A few of the name brands for this drug are Novapam, Librium and Tropium.

The short term use of these drugs is extremely helpful to alcoholics because withdrawal symptoms from quitting alcohol use can be fatal. The use of benzodiazepine acts as a substitution for alcohol for enough time to get over alcohol addition.

However, there is a danger that alcoholics must be made aware of. Benzodiazepine can also be prescribed for people with anxiety disorder. This can be a lethal combination for many alcoholics for a few reasons.

The first reason is that many alcoholics are ashamed of their abuse of alcohol. In addition, the sides effects of alcohol withdrawal are similar to that of general anxiety. Thus, an alcoholic may believe that they have an anxiety disorder when the real problem is their withdrawal from alcohol. Moreover, there are people with anxiety that use alcohol as a means of self medication to treat their anxiety.

These complications often work along side of one another and the biggest danger is that doctors and psychiatrist can prescribe benzodiazepine to patients without their patients ever telling them the truth about their abuse of alcohol. It is for this reason that any person who drinks heavily must tell their doctors or psychiatrists about their drinking.

The reason that it is important to be aware of this phenomenon is because the use of alcohol and benzodiazepine together can cause coma and even death.

Alcohol and benzodiazepine act in a similar way. They have a calming effect on the body that can in fact become too much for the body to handle when used in conjunction with one another.

Also, dependency to either alcohol or benzodiazepine or both can be equally dangerous. If someone who has an addiction to either were to stop suddenly the end result can be deadly.

In conclusion, it is important that there is awareness for alcoholics about the dangers of alcohol and benzodiazepine. If you are dependent to alcohol you must tell your doctor or psychiatrist the truth about your condition. If you have anxiety is is extremely important not to use alcohol as a means of self medication. If you are addicted to both you must talk to your doctor before quitting either alcohol or benzodiazepine. If you are taking any kind of sedative and you are not sure what it is ask your doctor about the effects of the drug and alcohol and the effects of suddenly stopping your use.
